50 Things you didn’t know about Star Trek (for Virgin Movies)

Following on from my recent ‘20 things you didn’t know about Iron Man’, Virgin Movies commissioned this more ambitious piece. The key challenge was to ‘solve’ the layout, balancing the facts for each movie and making the overall text shape flow. Hope you enjoy, and maybe discover some interesting facts about the Star Trek movies along the way!

Chris Pine as Captain Kirk (for Planet Pulp’s Star Trek Interstellar Illustration Art Show)

It’s been too long since I contributed to a monthly Planet Pulp theme, so even though they were covering Star Trek in April, and I had already created a Trek piece for the Bad Robot show at Gallery1998, I thought I’d try and squeeze in a portrait of Mr. Pine. Hope you like it.

If you’re not familiar with Planet Pulp, then I urge you to check out the main site or the Facebook page. Basically it’s an invitation-based online gallery with a new pop culture theme each month.

Hope you like it. Oh, and actually, if Star Trek is indeed your thing, then a third (and probably final for the time being at least!) piece just might be on the way soon. In fact, this earlier post is a detail from it.

Excited to announce that the prints I’ve contributed to the Bad Robot (Gallery1988) and Scorsese-themed (Spoke Art) shows this month are now available to buy online, and are both available in limited numbered editions of 10.

One man + one building + several bad guys = Die Hard with another name (for Virgin Movies)

Editorial illustration to accompany an article about the ‘the best Die Hard movies (that aren’t even Die Hard movies)’, coinciding with the UK release of Olympus Has Fallen, which essentially swaps Nakatomi Plaza for the White House and Bruce Willis for Gerard Butler.

Of course the word is that Die Hard 5 isn’t even a Die Hard film (not been able to bring myself to watch it yet – still recovering from the 4th one!), so I guess someone has to keep the high concept going. Thanks Mr. Butler!

Evil Dead Flyer (for STUDIOCANAL via Picturehouse Cinemas)

Created this for an exclusive Evil Dead (remake) preview screening at The Ritzy in Brixton before the national release.

I Recall Every Fall (for Spoke Art’s Scorsese: an art show tribute)

I’m pleased to be able to share the Raging Bull-inspired piece I’ve created for San Francisco’s Spoke Arts show, Scorsese: an art show tribute, which runs from Friday 19th April to Sunday April 21st at Bold Hype Gallery in NYC.

Going back through Scorcese’s films seeking inspiration, I suddenly spotted the aesthetic similarities between the pool where Jake first sees Vickie, and the boxing ring. Both flat surfaces effectively, framed/penned in by 3 railings for the pool, and 3 ropes for the ring. I felt this could work well visually, but then also have a nice semantic depth to it, as it’s possible to see Jake and Vickie’s first meeting as the beginning of his downfall, both personally and professionally.

Ten gicleé prints will be for sale at the show, and then online afterwards.

Ryan’s Driving School (for Virgin Movies)

This piece accompanies an article speculating on the professions that Mr. Gosling might be best suited to after announcing he plans to take some time out from acting. I felt that setting up a driving school would be a natural choice.

After Spring Break (for Vertigo Films)

Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers came out in UK cinemas last weekend, and Vertigo Films commissioned me to create this exclusive artwork to help celebrate. The ‘Before Spring Break’ piece was revealed on the day of release.

Of course they were also designed to sit together, so I’ve also included portrait and landscape versions in this photoset.

Before Spring Break (for Vertigo Films)

Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers is out in UK cinemas tomorrow (April 5th), and Vertigo Films commissioned me to create this exclusive artwork to help celebrate. The ‘After Spring Break’ piece will be revealed soon.

THE ROCK – FRANCHISE VIAGRA (For Virgin Movies)

This week I was commissioned to illustrate the beefy star of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, who’s been wheeled into this franchise as well as Fasterer & Furiouser (or whatever it’s called nowadays) to give it some extra oomph.

The piece accompanies this article about the ‘phenomena’, speculating which other franchises might also benefit from Dwayne’s involvement. Okay so the illustration’s a very literal take on the subject, but hey, I had fun!

The Paperboy (for Virgin Movies)

My editorial piece for Virgin Movies this week accompanies an article by Charlie ‘Ultra Culture’ Lyne entiled ‘The Paperboy’s Route from Crap to Camp’ and features portraits of Efron, Kidman and Cusack.

DOUBLE WAHLBERG (for Virgin Movies)

Following the Oscars piece I created for them, I’m pleased to say that this is the first in a planned regular series of editorial illustrations for the Virgin Movies blog.

This is for an article assessing the various merits (or not) of Mr. Wahlberg, an actor who seems to veer between good and not-so-good more than most, which you can read here. The theatrical masks seemed like a fitting way to illustrate this duality.

The 85th Academy Awards in Numbers - infographic designed and illustrated for Virgin Movies.

As you can imagine, I had lots of fun putting this one together, figuring out the composition and balancing out the design and typography with all the illustrations needed.

Basically I created a nice tight grid to build everything on, and used various weights of Museo Sans (which is actually a typeface that Virgin used but it also just happened to be perfect for my needs) to bring it all together and add interest. With the wealth of information to be presented (in terms of the statistics themselves and the visual complexity), locking the palette down to black, white and red (and grey) seemed like a natural way to unite everything and ensure that it packed a punch.

Huge thanks to Virgin Movies for letting me loose on such an interesting challenge.

UPDATE: Pleased to say that the image made it onto Reddit’s homepage getting as high as number 12, and the original imgur file has had over 650,000 views!

Dredd/Anderson

Finally caught Dredd over the weekend. Loved 2000AD when I first discovered it around age 12, and the gritty taut feel of this adaptation really hit the spot for me. It certainly doesn’t mess about for a single moment (well, despite the Slo-Mo!), and I felt inspired to capture the visages of Dredd and Anderson.
